The Pininfarina of America sponsored and participated in a “Valentine’s Day Clean Up” organized by Miami based nonprofit Clean This Beach Up (CTBU). With their weekly events they educate the community about plastic pollution and other environmental issues. Since 2019 CTBU has collected over 41,000 lbs of marine debris from South Florida’s shorelines and waterways.
There were a total of 76 volunteers (including some of our team members, FIU students, and others) who collected 300 lbs of trash in 2 hours. Most of the debris was single use plastics, fishing nets, Styrofoam and micro plastics. Volunteers ranged from the ages of 6 to 60+
The nonprofit selected FIU Biscayne Bay Campus because of the amount of micro plastics that wash ashore during the high tides. The campus is surrounded by mangroves and mangroves are one of the most important ecosystems in the planet and as environmental organization they want to bring awareness to this.
Being in Miami these are issues that pertain to us, our local community and we believe in a sustainable future, and any help is great help to our environment.
