Chicago, July 15, 2024 – The Chicago Athenaeum has named the E-Gap Fast electric charging station and the Vidde Alfa electric snowmobile as winners of the 2024 Green Good Design Sustainability Award in the Green Transportation and Green Products categories. The Green Good Design Sustainability Award aims to provide international recognition to individuals, companies, organizations, governments, and institutions – along with their products, services, ideas, and concepts – capable of promoting greater progress toward a more sustainable world.
The design program is organized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in collaboration with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. The jury recognized Pininfarina’s ability to design innovative and sustainable solutions through continuous research and multidisciplinary expertise. Pininfarina developed these projects inspired by two key concepts: reducing environmental impact and thinking about a sustainable business model.
E-GAP FAST
E-GAP FAST is the ultra-fast charging station with an integrated battery and a charging power of 150 kW, designed by Pininfarina. It can be customized with an AC Wallbox configuration of up to 22 kW. Through in-house designed software, it dynamically distributes the charging power based on energy needs. Pininfarina collaborated on the design of E-Gap Fast starting from the definition of the user experience, then working on the product design and finally defining the user interface. The user experience was envisioned in off-grid contexts, allowing two vehicles to be charged simultaneously. In terms of physical design, E-Gap Fast features two charging connectors equipped with a luminous interface that intuitively communicates the vehicle’s charging status. The charging cable length has been maximized for ease of use. The rear side of E-Gap Fast is equipped with large LED screens, usable both for user interaction and for projecting images and videos. In this project, Pininfarina integrated and synergized its capabilities in product design and HMI (Human-Machine Interface).
VIDDE ALFA
Pininfarina and Vidde developed Alfa, a snowmobile designed to minimize environmental footprint and ensure ecological sustainability. To achieve this goal, besides being electric, Alfa has been designed primarily to maximize to maximize the product’s useful life through a design that is: Attractive: captivating, essential, with form and function perfectly aligned. Functional: robust, easy to maintain and repair, agile, with great attention to detail. Timeless: modular and upgradeable, practical and easy to use, versatile to drive. In this project, Pininfarina leveraged all its capabilities in product and experience design innovation, from exploratory research to strategic design, product design, virtual and physical modelling and prototyping, as well as evaluative research.
