The Project

Is-Siċċa, the New Mediterranean Hub for Research and Innovation

Conceived by Pininfarina Architecture, Is-Siċċa will rise in an area currently occupied by a fuel storage facility, thus revitalizing the coastline with over 18,000 square metres of educational, developmental, commercial and recreational spaces. Is-Siċċa aims to become a Mediterranean hub for research and innovation, attracting talents, new industries and eco-startups. Inspired by the Maltese natural landscape, the project connects water and land, generating a bond between architecture and nature, while enhancing local communities and fostering interaction among eco-startups active in the field of blue economy.

The Way

An Innovative Project to Achieve Sustainability Goals

Is-Siċċa will not only replace a polluting activity, but is also intended to be an innovative project designed to achieve Malta's sustainability goals: it will generate quality economic activities, with a positive impact on the environment and society. Designed in accordance with the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Maltese Islands for 2050, the project encompasses all aspects of the building lifecycle. Natural bio- based materials and lightweight constructions strategies will be used to minimize processing energy during production, while reducing overall environmental emissions. 70% of energy use will derive from renewable and energy efficient systems.

The Idea

The Improvement of Residents' Quality of Life From a Sustainable Perspective

From a business point of view, Is-Siċċa will offer spaces for startups, with various resources for entrepreneurs in the field of sustainability and innovation, incubation centers for green industry and areas for educational facilities. Whilst 7% of the space will be allocated to industry, over 50% of the project will be dedicated to recreational usage. "The main goal of this project is to improve the quality of life for residents. The beach will be returned to the citizens and open spaces for cultural and social activities will be created to improve mental health and life quality," said Maltese Minister Miriam Dalli.
