Born as a coachbuilder, Pininfarina applies to contemporary coachbuilding a design culture that combines vision, vehicle knowledge and manufacturing expertise. Each program is defined according to brand and end-customer objectives, the technical base and the required level of dedicated content and exclusivity.
Coachbuilding for automotive brands
Coachbuilding creates special vehicles that can be developed from an existing platform, a donor vehicle or a defined concept.
The project can involve proportions, bodywork, surfaces, interiors, materials and details, building an autonomous identity while respecting the technical architecture. Some elements of the original platform may be preserved, while dedicated components and design features are developed for the new vehicle.
Package, hard points, structure, opening systems, visibility, cooling, aerodynamics and component interfaces guide the design from the earliest stages. Defining these constraints in advance helps control the impact of formal decisions on engineering, timing and execution.
A coachbuilt vehicle can represent the most advanced expression of a brand language, introduce a new product direction or support a program aimed at the most exclusive segment of the customer base.
From vision to vehicle
The brief defines objectives, target, vehicle base, volume and project scope. The initial platform analysis establishes package, fixed points and carry-over strategy for the development of exterior, interior and CMF solutions.
Concept, surface development and feasibility assessment translate the design direction into progressively verifiable data. Design and engineering coordinate components, interfaces and functional requirements through successive review and approval stages.
Physical and digital models support the evaluation of proportions, ergonomics, surfaces and details. Depending on the program, the process can include functional prototypes, aerodynamic checks, validation and support for build activities.
Change control and shared design freeze milestones keep styling, technical development, sourcing and program timing aligned. Activities, outputs and responsibilities are defined with the client and integrated into the overall program governance.
One-off and few-off
One-off
A one-off is a single vehicle developed as the unique expression of an identity or a specific design direction. Bodywork, interiors, materials and details are defined around the program, while maintaining the required relationship with the platform and its technical constraints.
The uniqueness of the result still requires controlled data, identifiable components and defined quality criteria. Even a single vehicle must ensure consistency between concept, development, assembly and final configuration.
The design strategy focuses on the solutions that create the strongest impact on the vehicle identity, while controlling the number of dedicated parts and new technical interfaces.
Few-off
A few-off applies the same project to an extremely limited number of units. The vehicles share architecture, surfaces and main components, while retaining opportunities for individual configuration through colors, materials, finishes and details.
The planned volume influences materials, tooling, sourcing and assembly methods. Development must reconcile personalization and repeatability, defining a common technical base and a controlled system of variants.
For larger low-volume programs, coachbuilding capabilities connect with Pininfarina’s limited-series production service, where processes, components, supply chain and production organization play a more structured role.
Development and execution
Pininfarina can support the program across the phases included in the agreed project scope: from vehicle concept to styling feasibility, from engineering development to material selection, up to painting and final assembly.
When the program includes build activities, these can rely on dedicated spaces, technologies and departments at the Cambiano facility. Design, engineering and surface development are coordinated with production, quality, process engineering, purchasing and logistics.
This integration makes it possible to assess buildability, component availability, assembly sequences and acceptance criteria in advance. Configuration control and part traceability help maintain consistency between project data and the final vehicle.
Programs are managed according to high standards of confidentiality, consistent with the strategic relevance and level of exclusivity of the vehicles being developed.
Collaboration
The service can be structured as an integrated path or as a specialist contribution within a client-led program.
Pininfarina can work on concept, exterior and interior design, surface development, feasibility, engineering, prototyping, validation or execution, collaborating with the technical teams and industrial partners already selected by the OEM.
At the beginning of the program, scope, responsibilities, interfaces and approval milestones are defined. Shared governance helps manage decisions across design, engineering, procurement and production, controlling the impact of changes on cost, timing and quality.
This configuration allows specialist capabilities to be integrated without necessarily changing the client’s organizational model, preserving continuity of vision across the different phases of the program.
